6 Quick Dog Obedience Training Tips for You and Your Pup

Hey there, fellow dog lovers! Welcoming a new puppy into your home is such an exciting and joyful time. But along with all the cuddles and playtime comes the responsibility of ensuring your new furry friend grows into a well-behaved and obedient companion. Here at Wild Acre Kennels, Andrew and I know how crucial early and consistent training is. Whether you're new to dog ownership or just looking to sharpen your training skills, these six tips will help you and your pup succeed in dog obedience training right here in Minnesota.

1. Teach Patience: Sit Before Doorways and Meals

One of my favorite ways to teach patience is by having your dog sit before going out the door or before meals. This simple routine is like magic—it helps your dog understand that good things come when they wait. It’s a small change that makes a big difference in their behavior.

Here’s how you can start: hold the door or the food bowl and say, “sit.” When your dog sits, give them lots of praise and then proceed. Do this consistently at every mealtime and before every walk. With time, your dog will naturally start to sit and wait, making outings and feeding times so much easier and more enjoyable.

2. Use a Training Chain to Establish the “Heel” Position

Using a training chain, sometimes called a choke chain, can be helpful in teaching your dog to heel. "Heel" simply means your dog walks right beside you without pulling on the leash, making walks much more enjoyable and reinforcing your role as the leader.

To use a training chain effectively, make sure it fits properly and use it with gentle corrections. Walk with your dog on your left side, giving a slight tug on the chain and saying “heel” when they pull ahead. When your dog stays by your side, reward them with praise or a treat. With consistency and practice, your dog will understand and walks will become a pleasant experience for both of you.

3. Be Consistent and End on a Positive Note

Consistency is the key in dog training, they thrive on routine and clear expectations. It's important that you use the same commands and follow the same training routines every day. This helps reinforce what you want from them and encourages good behavior.

Always end each training sessions on a positive note. Whether they are nailing a command or enjoying a fun playtime, making sure your dog finishes with a positive experience will make them eager for next time. Training should be an enjoyable bonding time for both of you.

4. Keep Training Sessions Short, Simple, and Fun

When training sessions run long, it can be overwhelming for your dog. Keeping sessions short, around 10-15 minutes, ensures that your dog remains focused and engaged. Using simple commands like sit, stay, and come during these short bursts helps encourage your dog and helps with consistent training.

It helps to ensure the training if fun by adding in play and rewards. Use treats, toys, and lots of praise to keep your dog motivated and encouraged. A happy dog learn quickly and remember what they’ve been taught. Short, fun sessions will leave them looking forward the training bond you are building with your dog.

5. Enforce the “Off” Command from a Young Age

The “off” command is important to training your puppy. "Off" is a great way to discourage behaviors like jumping on people or furniture. Start training "off" as soon as you bring your new puppy home. When your dog jumps up, firmly using “off” and gently guiding them back down will reinforce your expectations and encourage the bond you are building with your dog.

Consistency is the cornerstone of the “off” command. Reward your puppy when they comply, reinforcing that staying off is the desired behavior. Consistency comes with patience and persistence. When you are consistent your dog will learn to respect the boundaries you expect.

6. Start Obedience Training Early

The secret to having a well-behaved dog is starting obedience training as soon as possible. Early training sets the stage for a lifetime of dog obedience. Puppies are like sponges, eager to learn and ready to please and obey.

Starting with basic commands and gradually introducing more advanced training can help slowly bring all the training together. Ensuring socialization and exposure to different environments are also crucial in the early stages of shaping your dog's obedience. Invest the time early in training, it will pay off, resulting in a happy and obedient pet.
